About a year ago I started doing some journaling: writing about training, skiing and working out, and reflecting on the big events during the season. It was a good way to make my thoughts concrete and not have them just floating around in my head; it really helped me gain perspective on what I was doing, and what I wanted to do going forward. During the season, we would write down what we were going to work on the next day, or what we wanted to think about on race day, or what we actually had thought about on race day, and how those things did or did not line up with reality. Now that the ski season is getting close, here are some questions that I think are interesting as your approach to the start of the season takes shape:
· List 5-10 things that you have done from the last race until now (on & off snow).
· Was what you just described enough? Did you do enough?
· If not, what would enough look like?
· Name 5 of your competitors that you think probably did enough.
· Between right now and your first race what will you do in order to have done enough? Will you have to compensate for not doing enough previously?
I think these questions are a good way to evaluate what you’ve done in the off-season, and it can be a way to learn something going forward. Remember, you have to be truthful in your answers for them to be worthwhile.
